The menopause occurs as a natural part of the female life cycle, usually
between the ages of 45-55 years, signalling an end to the fertile years.
In women over the age of 45 years, production of the hormone oestrogen
by the ovaries gradually comes to a halt. During this time, the
female body has to adapt from a life heavily influenced by oestrogen
and the menstrual cycle, to a life devoid of this hormone. This decline in
oestrogen results in menopausal symptoms, which may last for just a few months
or linger on for several years.
